SPECIAL TOPIC: IDOLATRY (OT)
The Bible contrasts the one true creator God with the manmade idols (i.e., human
superstition based on natural events or animals, cf. Rom. 1:18-32). There are several different
words and phrases used, but all communicate the same concept of "nothingness." Here are a few
sample texts.
- from the Ten Commandments ‒ Exod. 20:4; Deut. 5:8 (also note 4:15-19,25,28; 27:15)
- problem with the golden calf ‒ Exodus 32
- from Leviticus ‒ cf. Lev. 19:4; 26:1
- from the history books of the OT
- 1 Sam. 12:21-22
- 1 Kgs. 15:30 (the two golden calves); 16:13,26
- 2 Kgs. 17:15; 19:18
- from the Psalms ‒ Ps. 31:6; 115:2-8; 135:15-18
- from the major prophets
- Isa. 2:8; 17:8; 41:24,29; 44:9-20
- Jer. 2:5; 8:19; 10:2-5; 14:22
