The name "Mary" (Maria, Luke 1:27) has several possible etymologies.

from Moses sister, Miriam (BDB 599, cf. Exod. 15:21). The meaning of the name is unclear

from a woman named Naomi (i.e., pleasant, Ruth 1:20). She asked to be called "Mara" (i.e., bitter)

Synoptic Gospels call her "Maria" (cf. Luke 1:27
