SPECIAL TOPIC: "MARY" (the name)
The name "Mary" (Maria, Luke 1:27) has several possible etymologies.
- from Moses sister, Miriam (BDB 599, cf. Exod. 15:21). The meaning of the name is unclear
- Egyptian root -- beloved
- Hebrew root (uncertain)
- bitter
- rebellious
- stiff or erect
- sea of bitterness
- strong, thick
- from a woman named Naomi (i.e., pleasant, Ruth 1:20). She asked to be called "Mara"
(i.e., bitter)
- Aramaic "Maryam" ‒ Mar-bitter; yam-sea
- From Eusebius and Jerome from "Mar" (i.e., sea)
- Synoptic Gospels call her "Maria" (cf. Luke 1:27
