SPECIAL TOPIC: MULES/DONKEYS

There are four different Hebrew words for donkeys/mules. Mules are a cross between a donkey and a horse. This mixing of species is forbidden in Leviticus, so the Israelites must have bought them from the surrounding nations.

The she-mule was used for Israeli kings as a royal mount. The male mules were used to carry heavy loads. The donkey colt functioned as a symbol of

  1. royalty
  2. humility

The colt in Matt. 21:2 had never been ridden, which again, plays into the royal mount imagery.

It is interesting that Matthew always has "two," while the other Synoptics have only one (i.e., blind people, angels, animals). Why, is uncertain.
