This term (BDB 92, KB 116) could refer to
- a pit for cooking (Arabic root, i.e., Deut. 6:11)
- a pit for rain water (i.e., cistern, cf. Lev. 11:36; Deut. 6:11; 2 Sam. 23:15,16; 2 Kgs. 18:31; Prov. 5:15)
- a well (1 Chr. 11:17-18; Prov. 5:15; Eccl. 12:6; Jer. 6:7)
- a pit for storing grain (1 Sam. 19:22; Neh. 9:25)
- a pit to trap animals (2 Sam. 23:20)
- a pit for holding prisoners (Gen. 37:22; 41:14; 2 Kgs. 10:14; Jer. 38:6; 37:16; Zech. 9:11)
- a place to ambush from (1 Sam. 13:6)
- a figure of wickedness (cf. Ps. 7:14-15; 40:2; 88:6)
- a euphemism of death/grave (cf. Ps. 28:1; 30:3; 88:5-6; 143:7; Prov. 28:16;
Isa. 14:19; 38:18; Ezek. 26:20; 32:25,29,30
- imagery for one's wife (cf. Prov. 5:15; S of S 4:12-15
