SPECIAL TOPIC: PURPOSE
"Purpose" is the compound term pro plus tithemi, which has several senses.
- in Rom. 3:25
- set forth publicly
- propitiatory gift
- to plan beforehand
- of Paul, Rom. 1:13
- of God, Eph. 1:9
The NOUN form (prothesis), used in Rom. 9:11, means "to set before"
- used of the shewbread in the temple, Matt. 12:4; Mark 2:26; Luke 6:4
- used of a predetermined, redemptive purpose of God, Rom. 8:28; 9:11; Eph. 1:5,11; 3:10; 2 Tim. 1:9; 3:10
Paul uses several compound terms with the PREPOSITION pro (before) in Romans 8 and 9 of
Romans and Ephesians 1 (they show God's planned activity).
- proginosko (foreknew), Rom. 8:29
- proorizo (design beforehand), Rom. 8:29 (Eph. 1:5,11), 30 (Eph. 1:9)
- prothesis (predetermined purpose), Rom. 9:11
- proetoimazo (preface beforehand), Rom. 9:23
- prolego (previously said), Rom. 9:29
- proelpizo (hoped beforehand), Eph. 1:12)
